IJmuiden (for Amsterdam), Netherlands

Additional Information:

  • Class: Municipality
  • Activities: If evaluating cruise destinations is like going to a major Broadway show, IJmuiden is the practical, industrial parking garage right across the street from the theater. You do not dock there because the port itself is beautiful or because it offers incredible city architecture at the pier. You dock there because it is the most efficient, highly functional transit hub to drop you off so you can go see the main event: the magnificent art, canals, and history of Amsterdam. - rent bicycles to ride through the coastal dunes, walk the expansive sandy beaches, - explore the WWII Atlantikwall bunker museums; Excursions to Amsterdam - local beaches are wide and feature nice beach clubs GETTING TO AMSTERDAM: Jmuiden is the industrial port where many larger cruise ships dock, located about 45 minutes outside of Amsterdam. To get there on your own: - Local Bus & Train: You can walk from the cruise terminal to the nearest local bus stop and catch Bus 382 (operated by Connexxion). Take this bus to the Amsterdam Sloterdijk train station. From there, it is a very quick (approx. 5-minute) train ride directly into Amsterdam Centraal station. - Taxi / Rideshare: Taxis are usually available at the IJmuiden terminal, but this will be a much more expensive option (often €80 - €100+ each way) and traffic can affect travel time.
